THE FEELING OF WHAT HAPPENS
Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness
Antonio Damasio
Harcourt, Brace, 1999
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After reading this book, the reader will be familiar with contemporary research on consciousness from psychology, neurology, and neurobiology.
This book argues that consciousness derives from the feeling that arises when a person is aware of his or her self and of another object, and of the relationship between these two. 'The core consciousness process includes the enhancement of the object that initiated it, so that the object becomes salient as part of the relationship it holds with the knower organism.' It incorporates research and clinical information from neurology, psychology, and neuroscience. This book was chosen as one of the best books of the year by the editors of THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW.
