HYPNOSIS AND THE TREATMENT OF DEPRESSIONS
Strategies for Change

Michael Yapko
Brunner Mazel, 1992

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After reading this book, the reader should understand the multidimensional nature of depression, the history of the use of hypnosis in the treatment of depression, communicative aspects of hypnosis compared with traditional conceptions, hypnotic aspects of nonhypnotic therapies, similarities between depression and symptomatic trances, stages of treatment, the role of expectancy in treating depression, and uses of trance and learning in therapy.

The cognitive distortion of depression, constructing a negative and imprisoning reality, has much in common with a hypnotic state. The depressed person generates projections hurtful to the self.

In the way that hypnosis is 'believed-in imagination,' the person is convinced that his or her version of reality is true and more positive possibilities are not even considered. In a sense, the person is experiencing a 'symptomatic trance.' Yapko shows how understanding this, getting the client to understand it, and appropriate use of therapeutic trance can be a useful part of treatment of depression.

Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist in private practice in San Diego, California. He conducts programs on a variety of applications of hypnosis and brief therapy methods. His books include TRANCEWORK: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PRACTICE OF CLINICAL HYPNOSIS, WHEN LIVING HURTS: DIRECTIVES FOR TREATING DEPRESSION, FREE YOURSELF FROM DEPRESSION, SUGGESTIONS OF ABUSE, and BRIEF THERAPY APPROACHES TO TREATING ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION.
